Subway Fresh Artists Featured Filmmakers Returns!

You know when you have an emotion so powerful inside you that the only way to express it is to break out in song?  I do that a lot, and you know what?  Nobody around me is happy.  I sing about as well as I dance.  And this dog dances better than I do.

Lucky for you, my voice had absolutely nothing to do with “Frat House: The Musical,” an awesome new web series that just happens to be one of the winners of this year’s “Subway Fresh Artists Featured Filmmakers” competition!

Filmmaking students at USC and NYU—two of the top film schools in America—submitted short films for consideration.  Two teams from each school won the top prizes, which means their series are getting the star treatment!

First up is “Frat House The Musical,” the story of a plucky college freshman with pipes of gold and abs of steel.

He wants nothing more than to join his father’s fraternity.  Sadly, the Sigma frat doesn’t want him… until they realize they need him to survive.  Drama!  Dancing!  Singing!  Subway!  What more could you ask for?

For you to watch it.

Go Sukashi! Does It Again!

Remember when I said that Go Sukashi! was crazy awesome?  Well guess what?  They just got more awesome.  This week's episode of Sukashi just really blew my mind.  I don't have words really, just exclamations of mirth and...ecstasy.  Pure ecstasy.

I don't wanna spoil the magic, so I suggest you go and watch the new episode right now.  Parks are blown up and there's singing and dancing.  Perfect combination.  Enjoy!

A Holy Quadrinity - Josh, Jon, Matt, and Trey

Holy snaps! Check out our boy, Josh Gad - star of our upcoming series Gigi: Almost American, "on" The Daily Show last night! Okay, so Matt and Trey from South Park were really the guests; there to talk about their new Broadway musical The Book Of Mormon. But Josh was about as on as you can be without being there in person (check him out behind Matt and Trey, singing like a champ). Plus he's been on The Daily Show as a correspondent so no need to split hairs here anyway.

Matt and Trey got some pretty high praise from their Comedy Central counterpart. I won't spoil what Mr. Jon Stewart had to say, you can check it out for yourself. Actually, you need to hear it for yourself because it'd probably sound like I was making it up if I told you because when I say "high praise", I mean it was downright biblical (pun intended, suckas!).

Episodes of Gigi: Almost American launch 3/23, but you can get your fix now with the trailer and promos NOW.

Big Love for The Book of Mormon

Today is the day: previews begin for the new Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon" and I, for one, could not be more excited.  Why?  Three reasons.

1) Josh Gad, star of "Gigi: Almost American," My Damn Channel's original series premiering on 3/23, will also be starring in "The Book of Mormon" as Elder Cunningham, one of the two missionaries who travel to Africa in order to spread, eh-hem, the Book of Mormon.

2) Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Trey Parker and Matt Stone,  TREY PARKER AND MATT STONE!!!  "The Book of Mormon" is the brainchild of these two dudes who also created "South Park," you know, that show that's been hilarious for over a decade now.  These guys always go for it: it's guaranteed that "The Book of Mormon" will bring the hot fire cuz Trey and Matt they don't ever quit bringing the heat.

3) It's Broadway, baby!  I've seen every single show that's ever opened on Broadway since "Show Boat" opened in 1927.  I can't get enough of it!  The pageantry, the hot lights, the buzz, the singing, the dancing...at this tender age of 114, Broadway is more potent than a fistful of Viagra.

So scoop up your tickets right now.  Why wait?  WHY WOULD YOU WAIT?  There are no reasons.  Do it.

Bob Dylan Signs Six Book Deal?!

It's no secret that we love Bob Dylan at My Damn Channel, so we were extremely excited to read on IFC.com that it's rumored Bob Dylan has signed a six book deal, and will continue his enlightening, though typically enigmatic, memoir series "Chronicles".  The first volume was released in 2004, so it's been a while since we've had the privilege to enter the mind of Mr. Dylan.

And even though it's just a rumor, we're confident that it's gonna happen.  Why?  Well, we first heard the news via IFC, who just so happen to have content from their new series "Portlandia" on My Damn Channel.

Coincidence?  I think not!

So while we're waiting for "Portlandia" to premiere tomorrow at 10:30pm on IFC, and for the next Dylan volume to come out in who knows how long, enjoy this performance from Sweet Pea Atkinson, a soul singing legend who has recorded with Bob Dylan.

3 Years Ago: Launch Mode

Good things come in 3's.

3 years ago, a small band of true believers were readying the launch of My Damn Channel: 7/31/07.

Here are the inaugural videos from the first 3 artists we signed.

David Wain came in with the world's fastest pitch for Wainy Days: (paraphrasing) "I want to make out with the hottest women in the world and every date goes horribly wrong."

His first episode (a 3-parter) co-stars Elizabeth Banks as Shelly:

Harry Shearer was the first hero we signed. He sat in prosthetic makeup for over 4 hours to become Dick Cheney, singing sexy for Scooter Libby:

Harry Shearer as Dick Cheney.

We wanted music to marry comedy in our company from Day One. We turned to another brother and one of the best musicians and producers on the planet, Don Was.

Don's "Wasmopolitan Cavalcade of Recorded Music" is an earful of the best music you can't get anywhere else.

His first My Damn Channel production starred one of the smartest singer/songwriters we know, Jill Sobule:

Don Was, Rob Barnett, Jill Sobule, Warren Chao at the My Damn Channel west coast launch party, 2007.

Here's a rare, bonus video from the archives. Day one back on 7/31/07 also starred Big Fat Brain, the geniuses behind You Suck at Photoshop, and the web designers of all things DAMN. One of our only spoof vids looked 20 years into the FUTURE and poked our pals at Funny or Die, who had launched a few months earlier:

This Is My Confession

That new Harry Shearer video, Deaf Boys, premiered today.  And the worst part of it, the VERY WORST PART of it, is that the song has been stuck in my head ALL.  WEEK.  LONG.  I catch myself humming it at odd times of day, and when someone asks me what I'm singing I get so freaked out that I LIE ABOUT IT.  I mean, it's about the Catholic Church scandal...and priests and young boys...and I don't need anyone to think I'm weirder than they already do, so I LIE ABOUT THE SONG.

It's pretty much like Harry Shearer made me sin.  So, I start thinking I should go to confession, right?  Ask for forgiveness and all?  But "confession" just reminds me of that song by Usher: the one that's all about Chili from TLC, but Usher keeps saying it isn't?  So, now, because of Harry Shearer's Deaf Boys I have that stupid Usher song in my head.  And for that, Harry Shearer, I don't know if I can forgive you.

The Simpsons - 450th Episode!

Who says The Simpsons don't age??

This Sunday night, "The Simpsons" turn 20 yrs old and the Internet is going viral with excitement (I mean, hey, they're almost drinking age!).

For those who don't know (welcome to Earth!) - our very own Harry Shearer performs a huge range of the voices for the characters on "The Simpsons", including (but not limited to):

  • Mr. Burns
  • Waylon Smithers
  • Ned Flanders
  • Principal Skinner
  • Otto
  • Reverend Lovejoy
  • Dr Hibbert
  • Kent Brockman
  • Jasper
  • Lenny
  • Eddie (the cop)
  • Rainier Wolfcastle (McBain)
  • Scratchy
  • Kang
  • Mr. Bouvier (Marge's father)
  • Dr. Marvin Monroe
  • Herman
  • Mr. Largo
  • Marty (from KBBL)
  • Dr Loren J. Pryor
  • Jebediah Springfield
  • Judge Snyder
  • Sanjay (Apu's brother)

Wow!

Harry was featured in an interview with the Associated Press, and from there - it's spreading like a Winter Cold across the globe!

Here's a sneak peek:

Shearer, who began his career as a child actor... keeps a multiplicity of projects under way. He hosts his own signature channel on the "My Damn Channel" comedy Web site.

"Matt [Groening] has a satirical, anti-authority streak," says Shearer. "From the beginning, 'The Simpsons' was taking the side of the family against all the authority figures and institutions that buffeted them in the modern world. Certainly, that resonated for me."

To celebrate - we're asking all of our readers/fans to dress up as Ned and attend church this Sunday (JUST KIDDING).  In all seriousness, check out some of the awesome articles going around on the web with Harry's exclusive interview and don't make plans this Sunday evening.  This week's episode ("Once Upon a Time in Springfield") will be one you won't want to miss!

(It doesn't hurt that they're mentioning My Damn Channel, either... whoo-hoo!!)

Question Mark - Man or Martian?

Posted with tags Question Mark, 96 Tears, Don Was, Detroit All Star Revue, Concert of Colors, Mars, Dinosaurs on 12/1/2009 7:04:26 AM by Dan Grgas

It's been said he was born on Mars...

That he has walked with dinosaurs in a prior life...

That he has heard voices telling him that he will be singing "96 Tears" in the year 10,000...

Geez.  Don't wanna wait till then?  Neither did we.  Check out Question Mark perform his pioneering garage rock anthem "96 Tears" at the 2009 Detroit All Star Revue with our very own Don Was on bass.

There's no question about it.  Question Mark can rock.

LABOR DAY

Brad O'Farrell gave our almost official mascot the Labor Day treatment. Njoy. He's linked to one of our happiest videos of all-time.

New unemployment stats are the worst in 26 years. If you're like any of the dreamchasers at My Damn Channel, it's a fair bet you're no stranger to losing a gig in TV, radio, music, or the arts & little sciences.

"Go Your Own Way" may be a lame, overplayed, 70's sing-along...but it's also fine solution for what to do after getting tossed out of a gig.

We're raising a glass to everyone with the brains and the backbone to embrace a new way to get your work seen by an audience large enough to actually make you money.

One last-ever reference to Fleetwood Mac...

We got some sad news over the weekend, that one of our best co-cons at My Damn Channel is moving on. Vivian Kyinn provides much of the mystical glue that holds this house together. She wrote and co-produced a film called White Wall which got her to Cannes and now she's decided to get after her movie-making passions full-time. BIG THANKS & BIG LOVE to one of the better humans we know.

Warren Chao posted the replacement gig based in our LA office this weekend. Economic insanity created hundreds of candidates in hours. If you're read "The Night Feed" and know the best human for this gig - email: Jobs@MyDamnChannel.com
